Let’s Go To The Videotape (Or At Least The Hidden Cameras)

February 25th, 2008

By: Michael Gravette,

For years that has been the tagline of New York and Washington sporstcaster Warner Wolf. He started that schtick back in the early 1980’s and is still doing it today. The thing is, back in the old days, videotape is actually what was used in the surveillance game. We have plenty of old movies and television shows that you see the old tape machines running, usually in the back of an old van that is too cramped, and full of old food cartons.

Today the cops and many others still do surveillance, but the technology is light years beyond what was being done in those days. In fact, today, just about anybody can have a great surveillance operation. We have the capability to watch things today that nobody was even thinking about in 1980.

Hidden cameras can be put in almost any item, ranging from clocks, mirrors, and boomboxes, to teddy bears. You can even put a hidden camera in a cannister of Clorox wipes. I remember trying to locate the camera in that one, and finally somebody had to show me where it was. (You’ll have to find out for yourself.)

There isn’t anymore videotape these days. Oh, you may still see some old systems around, but they are dinosaurs, and they don’t work very well unless conditions are perfect, if they work at all.

Todays surveillance systems work in any kind of weather, and can virtually see in the dark. And you can sit in a crummy old van if you want to, but the reality is that with an internet connection you can watch your home or business from the pool or beach in the south of France. (Your can go there now that the French got rid of that idiot Jackie Chirac, and put a real man at the helm.) Or if you’re still upset with the French, you can go to Spain, or Portugal, and do the same thing.

Installation of hidden cameras takes place in minutes, and a full blown surveillance system would only take a competent electrician a few hours. Then its up to you, but if you have any problems, we have people standing by to help you get everything running smoothly.

Hidden cameras and surveillance systems are new frontline warriors against theft, abuse, and many other problem situations. They are high powered insurance at a relatively low cost. The feedback we receive here is that the systems easily pay for themselves in the first year, and then go on to actually be a profit center. You can’t ask for more than that.

If you’re prepared, you’ll never be surprised. .

Security Cameras In Schools And Colleges

February 15th, 2008

Security cameras being located in schools and colleges have turn into a big issue as far as whether they need to be installed or not. Many school officials in another area say they do not belong in schools and colleges as in some other areas the thought of security cameras in the schools and colleges are welcomed. By locating security cameras in schools and colleges people are felling the students may feel safer and at the same time ward off anybody who may wish to commit an act of violence.

The usage of security cameras in schools may as well prevent threats and acts of violence from actually occurring. The trouble of security cameras in several of the smaller schools and colleges is the expense. The maintenance on the security cameras and keeping them in working condition. Security cameras are already in use in many schools and in some places on campus’s of colleges. Such as security cameras in parking areas and in stadiums where sports are played. The security cameras allow monitoring of the areas they are placed and are not meant to invade any one’s privacy but to provide protection to the students and faculty as well.

Hidden Camera Uncovers Dishonest Housekeeper

February 3rd, 2008

A friends daughter complained to her mother that she thought her long time housekeeper had been pilfering small items from her home. The housekeeper had been with her for several years and she had always trusted her. She didn’t know what to do because she didn’t want to accuse her of theft if she wasn’t absolutely positive. There had been different workers in the home doing some home improvement which complicated matters.

My friend, knowing of my police background and current business, asked my advice. I asked what type of items had been taken and she said there were several small items ranging from collectibles to jewelry. Most of the items were located in her daughters bedroom. I suggested to her that her daughter set up a hidden camera in that room so that she could find out for sure if her housekeeper was in deed stealing from her.

She picked a wireless vanity mirror that could be placed on a dresser in her bedroom. About a week after setting up the hidden camera, her once trusted housekeeper was observed removing a ring from the woman’s dresser and placing it in her pocket.

My friend asked me what her daughter should do next. I advised her to contact the police and make a theft report. She spoke with her daughter and her daughter didn’t want to prosecute her housekeeper, she just wanted to get all of her property back and fire her. I tried to convince my friend’s daughter to make a police report because this housekeeper could continue her life of crime with other unsuspecting employers if she wasn’t stopped legally.

My friend’s daughter confronted her housekeeper and her housekeeper denied taking any property even when confronted with the fact that she had been caught on tape taking a ring. She became indignant and left the woman’s home.

This convinced the woman to make a police report alleging theft against the housekeeper. The housekeeper was more willing to cooperate with the police and several stolen articles were recovered from the housekeeper. She was charged with theft and pled guilty prior to going to trial. Because she had no prior record she was placed on probation.

If my friend’s daughter hadn’t set up the hidden camera she would never have caught her housekeeper stealing, the police would probably not have gotten her to give up the stolen property and the case would not have been strong enough to file. Because it was clear cut the housekeeper pled guilty rather than going to trial, saving court costs for the citizens of Ventura County, California.

Home Safety With Security Surveillance System

February 1st, 2008

Security Surveillance Systems comprising cameras and videos are arguably the best available protection available to homeowners. Homeowners can opt for on-site or off-site monitored systems. There are many types of cameras for different situations that can be incorporated within a surveillance system such as hidden/covert, wired or wireless, indoor or outdoor, night-vision or infrared and even fake/dummy cameras or a combination of all these. The other essential component of a surveillance system is the video. Here you can choose from time-lapse video cassette recorders (VCR) or digital video recorders (DVR) which allow for remote access. Before the advent of image recording security devices, burglars would commit their crimes and vanish without a trace unless caught in the act. Nowadays, once he is caught on camera, his chances of escaping the long arm of the law is considerably diminished.

Home Security Trends: What Works And What Doesn’t

January 29th, 2008

Home security can get a little overwhelming sometimes. A simple Internet search of “home security” produces thousands of results, each page advocating products and practices that will keep you and your home safe. With so many home security trends and tools, how do you figure out what works and what doesn’t?

Are you security-savvy? Is your home a fortress, or are you rolling out the welcome mat for potential burglars? Take this quiz to find out how much you know about effective home security.

1. Darn it! You’ve locked yourself out of the house again. It’s a good thing that you left a spare key:
A. Buried in the flowerpot
B. Hidden under the doormat
C. At your trusted next-door neighbor’s house

Correct answer? C. You should never leave a spare house key anywhere outside your home. It’s the oldest trick in the book, and burglars know it. Leave a spare key with someone you trust instead.

2. The best guard dog is:
A. A giant Rottweiler
B. A yappy Chihuahua
C. An intimidating German Shepherd

The answer is: All of the above. You don’t need a ferocious guard dog to ward off potential criminals. Studies suggest that the barking of any dog is enough to scare away the average thug.

3. The key to an effective home alarm system is:
A. Spending big bucks on the latest technology
B. Remembering to set your alarm every time you leave the house
C. Putting the little metal sign in your front yard

Correct answer? B. Even the most expensive alarm system you can afford won’t protect you if it’s not armed. Always take the extra time to set your alarm, even if you’re just leaving the house for a couple of minutes.

4. I live in an apartment, so I should rely on my landlord or management company to provide security.
A. True
B. False

And the answer is . . . False. Even if your landlord makes tenant safety a top priority, you should make a point to step up security in and around own apartment. Always lock your doors and windows, and never open the door to anyone you don’t know. Consider investing in a wireless alarm system – you get all of the benefits of a hard-wired system, but you can take it with you when you move.

5. I just moved to a safe neighborhood, so I shouldn’t worry about crime.
A. True
B. False

False. Crime can happen anywhere. From big, crowded city blocks to peaceful gated communities, everyone needs to make home security a priority.

Home security trends come and go. But the truth is common sense and a few basic precautions can help you protect your home from burglars. It’s OK to try the latest security fads like barking alarms and nanny cams, but don’t get so caught up in home security trends that you forget the cornerstones of defending your house and family. You don’t have to be trendy or spend thousands of dollars – you just have to be smart and aware of your surroundings.

Security Cameras are Illegal In Banks And Private Businesses In Canada

January 29th, 2008

Well, in this case I just absolutely was at a loss for words. According to research the implication of the personal information protection and electronic documents act initiated in Canada made it illegal considering banks and private businesses to use hidden security cameras or other types of security cameras in their establishment.

I thought I was reading wrong, however it is true. According to the act it is against the law to collect information or effigy, which includes the usefulness of security cameras, without the person’s written consent. This is unquestionable weird to me. In disposition to avail a security camera you have to have the consent of your customers. These financial institutions and banks surely realize the risk they are taking don’t they?
